Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Alberta are now taking on expanded roles in primary care through the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program (NPPCP), which allows them to operate independent clinics or work within team-based care settings.

Expanded Scope of Practice for Alberta Nurse Practitioners (NPs): Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program (NPPCP)

In Alberta, NPs are authorized to:

  • Diagnose, treat, and manage patient care independently
  • Prescribe medications, including some controlled substances
  • Order diagnostic tests and make specialist referrals

Through the NPPCP, NPs can now also:

  • Operate their own clinics or join existing team-based care practices
  • Deliver primary care services within their scope of practice, supported by compensation from Alberta Health

Licensing and Regulatory Requirements For Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program (NPPCP)

Licensing and Certification
All NPs must hold an active license from the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). This requires:

To join the program, NPs must:

  • Build a patient panel of at least 900 patients over time
  • Provide after-hours care on weekends, evenings, or holidays, and walk-in care
  • Enter a formal agreement with Alberta’s Ministry of Health to secure funding and outline their responsibilities
