It plays a crucial role in supporting the resilience and stability of the agricultural sector.

  • Purpose: The AgriRecovery initiative provides timely financial aid to farmers facing significant losses due to natural disasters, helping them to recover from unforeseen events.
  • Eligibility: It targets specific events and regions, offering support for extraordinary costs beyond what standard programs cover, as detailed in its key features.
  • Impact: Farmers benefit from this initiative through enhanced financial stability and the ability to maintain operations, ensuring the continued viability of their farms.

What is the AgriRecovery Initiative for Alberta Farmers?

To aid livestock producers who were affected by the 2023 drought, the Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance initiative has added 23 more eligible regions and extended the application deadline, providing a lifeline to individuals dealing with the aftermath of severe weather events. Funding is provided through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP).

Key Features of the AgriRecovery Initiative for Farmers

Livestock producers in eligible regions who altered their grazing practices due to drought conditions for more than 21 days can apply for financial support to cover losses incurred to manage and maintain female breeding animals. A minimum of 15 animals per type of livestock are required to qualify.

The initiative opened on January 29, 2024 and applicants may receive payments of up to $150 per head. The application deadline is February 22, 2024, and extraordinary costs can be incurred until March 31, 2024. This expansion also gives producers who were already eligible another opportunity to apply.
