______________

Canada’s carbon rebate program is designed to help small businesses manage the financial impact of the federal carbon pricing system, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By providing rebates to offset the increased costs of fuel and energy, the government is helping businesses stay competitive while striving to contribute to environmental goals.

How Does Canada’s Carbon Rebate Work?

If you own a small or medium business in Canada, you may be eligible for the Canada Carbon Rebate. The federal government is returning over $2.5 billion to businesses with 1 to 499 employees to help cover carbon pricing costs from 2019 to 2024.

This rebate applies to businesses in provinces where the federal fuel charge is in effect. It’s calculated based on the number of employees you had in a given year—the more employees, the higher the rebate. Payments will be issued through the CRA, with all eligible businesses set to receive their funds by the end of 2024. It is important to note that any rebate you receive is non-taxable.

If you filed your 2023 tax return by July 15, 2024, you’re in line for a payment soon. If you missed that deadline, you can still qualify by filing before December 31, 2024.

Note that if you operate a business in Alberta, you are not eligible to receive rebates for 2019 as the province did not participate in this federal program until 2020.

Is the Carbon Rebate Taxable?

Currently, the rebate is considered taxable income and must be reported on your T2 corporate tax return for the year you receive it.

However, the government has proposed making it tax-free. This change has not yet been approved, but if it passes, the CRA will allow amended T2 tax returns to adjust for the change. Further guidance will be provided when available.

What to Expect from Canada’s Carbon Rebate Going Forward

As the government continues its carbon pricing and climate initiatives, small businesses will remain a focus, with nearly $500 million in rebates expected for 2023-2024. Additionally, there may be more opportunities to receive funding for energy-efficient upgrades, further reducing operational costs.
